Engravings

Definition of Terms:

    Cutting is a method of decorating glass using rapidly revolving carborundum wheels of different sizes.  With their wheels, craftsman are able to cut any desired design much as an artist would draw a picture with a pencil.  When the piece comes from the cutting room, the cuttings are gray and are normally polished using either buffing wheels or by immersing in a solution of hydrofluoric acid.

    Copper Wheel Engraving is a method of cutting which employs cooper wheels supplied with a steady stream of emery dust and oil instead of using carborundum wheels.

    Gray Cut Engraving is an engraving which is not polished after cutting.

    Rock Crystal Engraving is the term normally applied to engravings that are polished by immersing in a solution of hydrofluoric acid.
